The Blues Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium)

A fetching upright grower with blue, red and green foliage, this Little Bluestem is an excellent ornamental prairie grass. More intense hues of orange, red, purple and blue add to the color symphony in fall. The Blues is a perfect choice for bioswales, rock gardens, container growing, borders, accents, rain gardens, meadows, and mass plantings. 3" raceme blooms of bronze to purple occur in summer and fall, but this grass is prized for its striking foliage.

The Blues can grow in various soil types, but we recommend planting these young plants in well-draining soil initially to help establish roots. It is deer resistant and once established, it is drought, heat and erosion tolerant. This grass loves full sun and is hardy to -30°F when protected from windchill. You can cut back to the ground in early spring (after the last winter frost) to help promote a healthy burst of new growth. This grass grows up to 4' tall x 2' wide. 

Our 1 gallon grasses are rooted, fertilized and ready to burst with new growth. Some grasses grow very tall and change in size rapidly across seasons. If you order a grass that is very tall at the time, we will trim it as needed for shipping.
