Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' Red Switchgrass

$27

Shenandoah Red Switchgrass boasts a vibrant mix of burgundy and green mixed blades, which takes on purple hues in fall. Butterflies really like the grass blooms, which show in summer. This perennial grass also has attractive dark ruby seed pods that add extra character to gardens and landscapes, and also attracts birds. Native to North America, Shenandoah is versatile and an excellent choice for borders, beds, riparian growing, meadows, and hedges. It is no wonder that Panicum virgatum is a winner of the Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Shenandoa grows to up to 4' tall x 4' wide, and prefers full sun. You will definitely need to plant this grass in well-draining soil. It is deer resistant and drought tolerant once established. This is a low maintenance ornamental grass, but we recommend cutting it back to the base at the end of winter, after the last frost, to help promote a burst of new spring growth. Hardy to -25°F when protected from windchill.

Our 1 gallon grasses are rooted, fertilized and ready to burst with new growth. Some grasses grow very tall and change in size rapidly across seasons. If you order a grass that is very tall at the time, we will trim it as needed for shipping.
