Blackhawks Andropogon gerardii

Also known as big bluestem grass, Blackhawks has striking dark purple (almost black) to green hued foliage that form an attractive upright clumping growth habit. Slender blooms emerge from tall stems in summer to provide extra character. Birds are attracted to the seeds in later season. This grass provides visual appeal to gardens and landscapes across all four season. Versatile and easy to grow, Blackhawks works well for borders, beds, and slopes.

This grass does best in full sun and can grow up to 5' tall x 2' wide. It can tolerate various forms of soil, but we recommend well-draining soil to help new plants take root. Blackhawks is a resilient grass that is drought tolerant once established, generally disease resistant, and deer resistant too. Hardy to -35°F when protected from windchill. 

Our 1 gallon grasses are rooted, fertilized and ready to burst with new growth. Some grasses grow very tall and change in size rapidly across seasons. If you order a grass that is very tall at the time, we will trim it as needed for shipping.
