The Plants You See are the Plants We Know

When you shop for a plant online, the photographs you see matter. Whether discovering a plant for the first time or already knowing it well, those photos help shape what you expect to eventually see in your own garden. At Rocky Knoll Farm, we invest heavily in photographing the plants we offer. Most of our images are taken right here at the nursery.

Why Original Photography Matters

When you’re shopping for a plant online, knowing the source of the photographs can be just as important as what they show. Original nursery photography provides the most direct visible access to the plants being grown, which is especially important when purchasing live goods. At Rocky Knoll Farm, we made the intentional decision to invest in original photography because it provides several important benefits when shopping for plants online:

Provenance

A plant photo that has been sourced from a third-party may or may not accurately depict what is being grown and sold. The picture(s) could have been taken from anywhere; a botanical garden, another nursery altogether, a private garden, or even another country. With Rocky Knoll Farm photography, you’re looking at the cultivar as it has grown at the nursery or as we’ve personally verified it in an established setting – often a plant we cultivated that was later established in a garden.

Consistency

Plant images can be sourced in various ways that often cannot be verified by the seller. Many nurseries utilize stock or licensed photography, grower-supplied images, or imagery gathered from other sources for their plant listings. We have discovered our own original photographs being used by other nurseries without our permission. This can create a patchwork of images from different sources, cameras, editing standards, lighting techniques, potentially resulting in poor overall accuracy of representation. Photography produced firsthand by the nursery creates a direct connection between the plant being represented and the source offering it. In the case of Rocky Knoll Farm, that also means that there is a consistent standard for how the plants are captured and portrayed.

Accountability

When a nursery commits to providing its own photography, it is taking responsibility for that representation. This is a key priority at Rocky Knoll Farm because we want you to see what we are seeing. Our photos are intended to help you understand the plant you’re considering for your own garden.

Our Pledge to Photo Integrity

Our customers deserve to know that they can trust the plant images they are seeing when shopping Rocky Knoll Farm. That is why we have committed to providing our own photography with strict standards. We do not:

  • Artificially enhance plant colors
  • Use digital light adjustments to change the appearance of a plant
  • Use AI-generated imagery to represent our plants
  • Alter blooms or foliage to make a plant appear better than it actually does

We occasionally remove a distracting blemish when it is cosmetic and insignificant to the health or character of the plant. Of the many thousands of plant photographs on our website, fewer than 5% have received this type of minor touch-up.

Identifying Authentic Photos

Our original photography is clearly identified with the Rocky Knoll Farm name. When you see our name on an image, you can be confident that the photograph was taken by us. We never place our name on photography we did not create.

More than a Pretty Bloom

We love a beautiful bloom as much as anyone. However, you will notice that our plant imagery usually shows more than just pictures of blooms. In fact, we feature up to 10 photos of each cultivar if we can. That is because we want you to see the rest of the plant too: foliage, stems, buds, and of course, lovely flowers. When shopping at Rocky Knoll Farm you can choose more than a pretty bloom – you can select plants that will provide an intentional garden experience throughout the year.

The Plants We Photograph are the Plants We Know

Building an original plant photography library takes time and commitment. It means observing plants as they grow, waiting for the right moments to photograph them, and adding more season after season. We make that investment because our photography is an extension of firsthand plant knowledge and a genuine interest in helping you shop with confidence. The plants you see are the plants we know – and we want the photographs you see to help you know them too.
